Spanish utility Iberdrola has awarded seven companies contracts with a total value of €300 million to supply one million meters with remote management capabilities, to advance its smart grid projects in Spain. Worldwide smart meter shipments in the fourth quarter of 2011 grew 11.8 percent over the previous quarter and were up 23.8 percent when compared to the fourth quarter of 2010, according to IDC Energy Insights' Worldwide Quarterly Smart Meter Tracker. Smart meter revenue in Europe is expected to grow from $318.4 million in 2010 to $1.93 billion in 2017 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 29.3 percent, according to a new analysis from Frost & Sullivan. TEPCO to install 17 million smart meters by 2019

Japanese utility Tokyo Electric Power Company is to install 17 million smart meters in households by March 2019 as part of its efforts to increase efficiency, according to an AFP News report quoting the Nikkei news. Spanish utility Iberdrola has launched an RFP to acquire 1 million smart meters based on the PRIME powerline communications standard, for deployment between March 2012 and February 2013 as part of its ambitious plan to deploy 11 million smart meters by 2018.
