Berg Insight says Europe risks failing to meet 2020 smart metering targets

Berg Insight says Europe risks failing to meet 2020 smart metering targets

According to a new report from the research firm Berg Insight, Europe is likely to fail in meeting the target of covering 80 percent of the electricity customers with smart meters by 2020. Germany’s decision not to deploy smart meters and delays in the rollouts in a number of countries including France will result in a penetration rate in the range of 60–70 percent by the end of this decade. While lower than anticipated when the EU first announced its energy efficiency goals for the 2010s, the rate of adoption is nevertheless impressive. [...]

Smart metering: Deutsche Telekom partners with ista

Smart metering: Deutsche Telekom partners with ista

Deutsche Telekom and the world's leading energy provider ista International are cooperating on the collection of water, heating, gas and electricity data using mobile communications technology. Water, heating and power meter readings collected by ista using state-of-the-art radio technology will be sent to a local ista communication unit which then bundles and forwards the data to ista's servers over Deutsche Telekom's highly reliable mobile communications network. As meters no longer have to be read in person, tenants no longer need to stay [...]

The Installed Base of Smart Meters Will Surpass 1 Billion by 2022

The Installed Base of Smart Meters Will Surpass 1 Billion by 2022

In a new report Navigant Research has reported that penetration rates of smart meters continue to climb, reaching nearly 39 percent in North America in 2012, and project the worldwide installed base of smart meters will grow from 313 million in 2013 to nearly 1.1 billion in 2022. This is despite a cooling in the growth in the market during the last year, even though strong market drivers remain in place on which utilities can build a business case. Neil Strother, senior research analyst with Navigant Research, says: “It’s safe to [...]
