Three Wholesale slashes time to market with new M2M platform

Platform enables new MVNOs to launch branded services in a few days.

Three Wholesale has launched a cloud-based, machine-to-machine (M2M) platform that significantly reduces setup time and costs for MVNOs looking to capitalise on the fast growing M2M and embedded connectivity market.

The Ericsson-based platform will enable MVNOs targeting M2M devices to go live on the Three network within just two weeks, significantly faster than competing platforms.

The platform gives Three Wholesale partners full control of their connections through their own branded portal. Functionality includes the ability for partners to activate and deactivate their own connections, track data usage, set alerts and apply data caps.

The move is part of Three Wholesale’s push into the connected devices market, estimated to be worth £82 billion globally, according to research by IDC. Ericsson suggests that there will be 50 billion connected devices in the world by 2020.

A number of partners are lined up to launch via the platform before the end of 2012 using the Three network to deliver high-speed connectivity for markets ranging from remote CCTV cameras to automatic number plate recognition systems.

Lynda Burton, Director of Three Wholesale, said:
Three’s network is built for the internet, so we’re in a perfect position to support data-rich MVNO applications. This platform opens up the power of our network to our M2M partners’ innovation. We will add new partners over the coming weeks to our strong portfolio of existing relationships and expect this business to grow as more MVNOs take advantage of the capability of our network and platform.

Ericsson’s President for West & Central Europe, Anders Runevad, added:

“This partnership with Three is the first of its kind in the UK and gives Three a dedicated infrastructure to expand services enabled by M2M capability. This takes us closer to the Ericsson vision of a Networked Society where more than 50 billion devices will be connected globally by 2020.”
