Smart Appliances and Remote Monitoring and Control Systems will Drive Smart Home Revenues in the UK to $1.5 Billion

Over 5 Million UK Homes Will Have Smart Systems by 2017

Strategy Analytics predicts that nearly 13 percent of broadband homes in the UK will have at least one smart home system by 2017. Growing awareness of energy management solutions, and a desire for remote-enabled entertainment controls and availability of smart appliances from companies such as Indesit and Bosch Siemens, will drive the bulk of households that adopt smart home systems and services in the UK, according to the latest Strategy Analytics Smart Home Strategies (SHS) research, “Smart Home Systems and Services Forecast: UK.”  In partnership with AlertMe, British Gas recently launched its Remote Heating Control solution, and First Utility is working with US energy efficiency and software company, Opower, to bring its “my:energy home energy management service” to UK consumers.

Home energy management will help stimulate the market as all utilities including EDF, E.ON and NPower move to install smart meters on all residences by 2019. Smart meter firms, such as Elster, Huawei, Itron, Landis+Gyr and Trilliant, are working to build interoperability specifications,” stated Bill Ablondi, Director, Smart Home Strategies advisory service.

Energy management alone will not drive the market,” commented David Mercer, VP, Principal Analyst, Digital Consumer Practice.

“Remote monitoring and control for peace of mind, comfort and convenience will also motivate adoption of smart home systems.”

This SHS research from Strategy Analytics also assesses the opportunity for other emerging smart home services, such as digital health systems, which offer professionally monitored home-based healthcare services, and smart appliances, like refrigerators integrated with automatic food monitoring and ordering technologies.
